Obama Signs Healthcare reform bill

Obama Signs Healthcare reform bill

President Obama signs the Healthcare reform Bill.

There’s a lot of  controversy with this bill. Conservatives fear it will bankrupt the nation and fear being forced to buy health insurance. Outside of preventing insurance companies from not covering children with pre-existing conditions, most of the regulation do not go into effect for four years.

Really the bill would be a very good one if there were a public option giving consumers an alternative if private for profit insurance companies charge too much money or refuse to pay for important Doctor mandated medical procedures.

As it stands, insurance companies would be fined $100 a day for every day they refuse to cover someone for being a high risk due to a pre-existing condition – that makes it a sound business decision to withhold coverage for a year if the subject might die without the procedure.

Mandating insurance by all citizens, the reasoning is sound – if healthier people pay into the insurance program then sicker people can be covered and the the insurance company can still make a profit. The problem is, with no public option, the private insurance companies can raise payment rates as high as they care to if they work together cooperatively – and the government is going to pay part of the bill if citizens cannot.

A non profit public option, like Medicare for all, isn’t the medical care everyone will want – but if it existed, private for profit insurers would be forced to match the quality and price of public Medicare.

It’s is true that some doctors will not take Medicare, because they do not pay enough. The bigger picture is that Medicare has a beaurocracy setting prices it pays and it pays low or high to different states and counties. Medicare can be fixed and it can be made available to everyone.

So, between now and the 4 years from now when the healthcare (insurance) reform bill becomes law of the land – there is hope that a public option can be made law and thereby salvage this bill.  Obama got this legislation passed, and He can build on that success.

I know it’s offensive to many to be forced to buy insurance. But look at your paystub right now if you have a job,  look at where your tax money is going. Notice, you are ALREADY paying for Medicare. Already you’re paying for other people’s healthcare – so demand that payment be for healthcare YOU have access to as well! Then, if you buy a private insurance – you can know the only way they can keep customers is doing a better job than Medicare!
