Colbert report, glamour magic and you can too!

Stephen Colbert’s mother has fallen ill and the show, Colbert Report, has been interrupted as the host takes time with his Mother.

The Colbert report is a very popular program and most of my readers I expect have some familiarity with the comedian and his ‘faux right wing’ persona. If you don’t know, Stephen Colbert satirizes the right wing pundit, such as those on FOX TV. But unlike John Stewart or other comedians that satirize right wing politics while clearly establishing a liberal bias, Stephen Colbert satirizes the right wing pundit by pretending to BE ONE!

How does this relates to Chaos magic and the idea of glamour magic? First, I’m using the word “glamour” as used in the folk myths of the fairie folk. In that mythology a human would find someone beautiful that in reality was not, or find a residence extrvagant that was really quite modest or even impoverished- and the illusion is labelled, “a glamour’. In a more relevant sense, glamour is creating an impression of being something you may not be, or of the person you want to be.

How Stephen Colbert relates to the concept os glamour magic is simple, he is an expert! How so? Because people that are Republican and right wing – THEY OFTEN THINK HE IS TOO!  Super conservative pundits that would NEVER be a guest on John Stewart’s Daily Show, they will be guests on the Colbert Report!  Because even if they understand Colbert is satire, his pretend conservatism is enough for them to feel comfortable, it’s enough for them to understand viewers of the show.. could be THEIR VOTERS!

Because for many human beings, the surface is as far as they go!

So, how can this be of use to you? Simple, you want to influence someone? Try to adjust your tone of voice and vocal patter..to theirs! If they are Conservative, you are conservative. If they are religious, you are religious. If they hate Corporations, you hate corporations. And guess what… you will get listened to! If you are in sales, you might make that sale!

This is harder to do if you are making a video or promoting something online. How you present yourself to match your audience, it’s simply not possible. But this is where fashion becomes power. Because how you present yourself has power, it shapes expectations and colors who you get to associate with and the opportunities that come to you.

For example, if you turn your hair into dread locks and wear tie die shirts – this becomes a social filter that allows you to smoke more pot and get access to more fun drugs andpeople of that milieu.

If you wear a suit, you get to be ‘professional’ and command a sense of respect. That’s the cultural dictate, it’s why some jobs REQUIRE a suit, usually high paid jobs or really low paid jobs in sales (where presentation is everything).

Politics is also about glamour, the Democrats are ‘Mommy’ and the Republicans are ‘Daddy’. And, very often gender influences who a person votes for. I’m waiting for someone to have the wisdom to sell progressive politics with MASCULINE glamour, harp on patriotism, accuse the opponent of ‘treason’ and pitch equal opportunity being the AMERICAN way, and corporatism being fascism! It would be a very powerful political sales technique!

Me, I’m an artist, writer.  My vision for dress is a three piece suit – black and customized with spikes and studs akin to what a punk would sport on a leather jacket. That would play with impressions and to my benefit I believe. My day job is a telephone market research gig so my looks are actually irrelevant in relation to job.

About Blog Security

Spammers type the most interesting things. I suppose when I get a wave of spam on a given subject unrelated to anything I’ve written before, it suggests it is because the spammer’s know there’s a lot of interest in that subject and they want to take advantage. I’ll follow that lead, it’s true blogs often get hacked and people when they get their blog hacked can let their imagination run wild. So there’s some virtue to sharing a little common sense.

When it comes to Blog security, really I am no expert. I’ve not learned C, I’m not a hacker and I know little to nothing about network security. And as an author writing a blog, it’s not your job or my job to know that stuff either. But what I do know, I’ll share here, and really it’s common sense. Or certainly anyone that knows more than I about Blog Security than I might hope this is common sense.

USE OPEN SOURCE

The nice thing about open source is that it tends to get security patches much quicker than Corporate closed source code, which commonly pretends a problem doesn’t exist until their smaller pool of programming talent, cleared to work with proprietary code, can deliver a solution. In the world of commercial operating systems, this explains why MAC OSX is so virus resistant compared to Windows, it’s not all market share (the OSX kernel is an open source project named DARWIN).

For this reason, when I choose web hosting I am biased to open source, so I use “LAMP”: Linux, Apache, MYSQL and Php (Python, Perl..etc). Microsoft offers alternatives and will find a way to run PHP even, but Windows servers are still Windows, still a vulnerable proprietary ‘secret’ source code only professional Windows programmers can create patches for.

I understand Windows has its fans, but really people that prefer Windows hosting don’t prefer it because it is secure or powerful, but because the operating system is convenient and familiar. Windows proprietary scripting languages (ASP) are also perhaps easier and more familiar to Windows users. But what I said about closed source holds true: Windows will not acknowledge a vulnerability to their OS, or even a highly destructive virus, until their small group of professional Windows developers have produced a patch. And as the market share leader, Windows provides the easiest and most attractive hacking target.

SECURE PASSWORDS

I Use the popular Word Press. I don’t claim it is better or more secure than other open source blogging systems, it may not be. But it is regularly maintained and patched, and upgrading an installation is especially painless. The main difference between a secure WordPress and an insecure WordPress installation, is the strength of your password. If you use a simple easy to remember human language password for convenience, something like “God”, “sex”, or “Power” – your site will be ridiculously insecure, the only thing standing between you and a hacker is almost the extent to which your blog is obscure.

I have seen password cracker software, it looks for real words in human language and then random characters – in brute force, over and over and over until it lucks into the right combination. It can be inevitable that such software will crack your password if you use only letters in your password, if you mix letters with numbers, the password become geometrically more complex to hack, if you use SHIFT characters (!@#$%^&*()_” in your password, it become much more complex – if you use a LONGER password, it become MUCH more complex.

G33k Sp33k:

You can substitute numbers and shift characters for letters, and this way create a pass PHRASE that is memorable and very very hard to hack.

Y0u c@n subst!tut3 numb3r2 and sh!ft ch@r@ct3rs for l3tt3r2, @nd th!s w@y cr3@te @ p@ss PHR@SE th@t is m3morable and very very hard to hack.

The right Blog system for you, for Security

I use WordPress and Drupal. Because they are open source and well supported. But notice that the reason is that they are open source and well supported. There is a LOT of open source software available for blogging, and much of it is very well supported! I have especially been impressed with Geeklog and tiki wiki – but I’ve not tried those yet. The right blog software for you is for you to find out. WordPress is great, but it’s not the only great.

But I will share that another difference between a SECURE open source Blog and an INSECURE open source blog – is the degree to which your software is UPDATED! Because the fact that pen source software gets regular patches and updates to keep it secure, it doesn’t help you at all if you never update your software!

Word Press makes updating the software ridiculously easy, push a button, and this is something to check out for other software.

Drupal is the opposite, if you simply replace the installation with the new update – you will lose all of your customization! With Drupal you have to carefully back up your database and any folders containing customization before updating, and replace that stuff after updating. It’s not that hard, but it is a pain, I wish they would implement push button upgrades too!

I NEED this spell to work!

The catch-22 of magic is that lust for result will sabotage any result. And if you NEED a spell to work! NOW! It is often a guarantee that it absolutely will never work for you!

Sigil magic might work, but if the problem is so important to you, it is almost impossible to ‘forget’. And to not be attached to the result, to ‘know’ a spell worked so well you need not think about it – that’s almost impossible for YOUR problem.

This is why Hoodoo is usually a commercial enterprise. If you PAY for a spell, this creates an expectation of value for your purchase, the exchange of money in and of itself has magical impact. And anyone that casts a spell for YOU, doesn’t care one way or another intrinsically about your result, they can focus simply on the law of attraction and ‘be’ that the spell worked. And yes, usually the spell will WORK this way!

So, in your case, unless you know and trust someone that casts spells professionally – it helps to have a friend. A friend that is open to casting spells. Because guess what that can do for YOU! It gives you a disinterested party that can cast the spell on your behalf. THEY can be as disinterested and non attached as the caster of a powerful spell should be, because it’s not THEIR issue! And YOU, you may be their friend, but you really are not nearly as obsessed with their love life or rent as THEY are – you can cast a very powerful spell for THEM in exchange!

If you have a magical path already that suits you well, please use that! If you have none, Sigil magic is simple practical and very powerful! Information on Sigil magic is here!

Revision of MyKitschChaos …again

I eliminated the SMF forum, it was buggy. It had an awesome number of people registering for it, but I suppose a forum may require a sold group of friends to get it started, and I’m just one guy.

So the new forum is not just a forum – but a Drupal installation! Got it installed, updated and basically configure in about 3 hours. Not bad!

What this mans to YOU, is YOU can create content for this site! Your Blogs, Your Articles, Your Forum! Not kidding! And it will only get better! Go to My KitschChaos – Right Now!

Why magic should be approached like a self help paradigm

So, I’m working out the book I’m going to write. If you’ve been reading this site, on one hand it may seem like I’m not offering anything really new in the book. And I know this even before I write the first word, because a lot of the content will be from this site.

Also if you’ve been reading this site, some of the ideas may seem more familiar from sales, self help or Law of Attraction than from classically ’occult’ sources. Allow me to blame Aleister Crowley, who distinguished ’magick’ as an act of will, any such act of will, including the blowing of one’s nose.

As a consequence of being introduced to that thought of Crowley’s  at a young age, it’s had an awful long time to peculate in my brain. Magic isn’t a fantastic thing like in Dungeons and Dragons, it’s a father losing his job and assuring his family they will be okay! Because if it your will to shoot fire from your finger tips, seriously the thing to do is to procure a flame thrower. Magic is any act of will, at is best it is  taking a stand that you can have a say in how your life turns out.

What of the supernatural? It is part of the real world, and even if you do not believe in a supernatural, it is concrete and real as an idea. And a cornerstone of chaos magic is the use your belief rather than be limited by it. If you can cry in response to a movie’s fantasy, if you can feel anxiety on behalf of a fantasy character in a fantasy circumstance – guess what? A movie maker or author has command over your belief! How can you believe you have any less command?

Children are natural magicians. And if you an adult, you once were a child and that part of you lives still and remembers! So it is a game, try believing in magic, do some magic and see what happens? Do you get your result?

If you don’t get your result, what did you do? And here’s where we get to the meat of the problem. Magic is not spell casting, magic is what happens before and after. If you cast a spell for money, are you actually working or gambling or running a business? If not, how do you expect money to come to you? This is called a path of least resistance, if the spell is powerful and you provide no easy means for the money to come to you, winning the lawsuit but not being able to ever walk again is a messed up way to get your money.

But it’s deeper than even that. Because what we really want are experiences. We want to be desired, admired, to have power and great friends. The heart of the best magic is knowing what you really want. And the problem with knowing what you want is that you are likely no match, not yet, for what it is you want. If you want to be desired, you have to love yourself first. If you want to be admired, you have to establish admirable virtues. If you want power, you have the have the courage to accept responsibility and the capacity to fulfill your responsibilities.

It’s a matter of will. What do you want, and who do you have to be to have that? How can you get from who you are now to where you want to be? And if magic is more than psychological priming (not that psychological priming isn’t potent and useful in its own right), it can only hack probability at best, produce an opportunity. Spells cannot give you what you are not ready for. Who you are may not be a match for what you want.  But magic need not be limited to spells! If you want a hot sex with a hot girl and happen to be overweight, what is stopping you from working out and eating a healthier diet?

And here’s how magic becomes a self help paradigm. Because to attract someone that is hot because they are hot in a superficial sense, it requires you yourself be hot in a superficial sense. Unless you can really believe you are hot with an extra 100 lbs, then the confidence may find you the person you think is hot that agrees with you. It’s a real world sexual fetish, the ‘chubby chaser’, but if you believe you are a hideous fat man – even a chubby chaser will believe you. And if you have heath problem and are overweight, maybe heath is what you want and need – what is stopping you?

And magic is critically important to personal transformation. That’s why Alcoholics anonymous will not relinquish GOD. And understand that as far as I’m concerned, working with God is also magic! When we do not know, we can fail to believe in ourselves – and we then we need something. And that something is magic, no matter what you call it. And there’s understanding your circumstances, which fear can obfuscate.

So of course magic should be akin to a self help paradigm! Because what we want are circumstances, and to have the circumstances requires being who we want to be, not just having what we want to have. Depending on who your are being, it may be impossible to have what you want!

Any spell is, or should be, a call to action. Because magic follows a path of least resistance, and the best magicians craft a path of least resistance for the magic t follow. If I want to be a successful cartoonist – I have to buckle down and create some good work, or else I may lose my life and the cartoons I’ve already done will win me fame posthumously! Magic is both a cookie, yes you can! – and a stick, or else! Especially Sigil magic, because it evades your self protection strategies of obfuscating your will by taking the desire straight to your subconscious/unconscious!

SOPA and why it is a threat.

Basically I am concerned about the “Stop Online Piriacy Act” Because it makes me, a small time webmaster, ultimately accountable for the legality of content posted on my blog. Now I accept accountability for the content I post to my blog, but being a blog, anyone can post a comment to my blog and I allow people to offer back links. It is possible for someone t post a link to my site to copy protected work displayed illegally, I only check for clearly illegal file downloads and porn. This site also features a forum where anyone can join and post content as they please, I edit it irregularly, but for the most part I write my blog. I could be in trouble if someone posts something copy protected in my forum – as the webmaster I would stand accused of piracy, not the ass that posted the stuff.

I’m not shutting this site down like Wikipedia, Mozilla, Twitpic and iCanHazCheeseBurger.com – mostly because I didn’t know about this in time to prepare (perhaps I should have) and being a one man webmaster, it seemed a bit more effort that it’s worth. The principle of the value of free speech is to be AVAILABLE to those that would hear you (or read you as in this case).

Happy Holidays & Reflection

It’s Dec 17 and many people are preparing for holidays. With a meager budget I’m buying gifts for family..and self too. There’s a faux battle to put “Christ” back in Christmas – as if the suggestion “Happy Holidays” is somehow an attack on the Christian tradition. Of course “Happy Holidays” is superior as a celebratory wish because it is inclusive of everyone that isn’t celebrating Christmas (Haunnkah or Kwanzaa  anyone?) and it also includes New Years! The threat to Christ at this holiday time isn’t the exclusion of Jews and agnostics by encouraging a “merry Christmas” – is that, and to children especially, Christ – even God, plays second fiddle to… SANTA CLAUS! and Please, this is the Santa that drinks Coke, not that foreign and strange ‘St. Nicholas!

Santa is a mighty egregore! Try asking Santa for something, sincerely as if He exists! See what happens!

Again I’m typing this on a library computer. My Computer died. This may be the work of magic even, as I’ve been meaning to  get work done on my Ithacat comic – and my addiction to online entertainment was sabotaging that end.  So now I have little better to do but work on the comic, and I am working on it because progreess on that end may be just the thing that enables the tech folks who have my computer now, to fix what is wrong – or to help me get the money to replace it with a more modern and powerful desktop.

Ithacat, it is going to be a very good comic. I’m not that superstar artist I would like to be, so accepting my limitiations is key to my getting the comic done. And I’m breaking it up into accomplishable parts, chapters.

I also need, desperately, to get http://hosthamstercrank.com configured and selling web hosting. That project is HUGE and intimidating, and what that makes clear is that I need a TEAM. Even this site – many replies suggest ‘we’ are doing a great job!, But really this is entirely the work of one person. and that’s a problem. Because teams can accomplish things one person cannot. It’s not easty for me, to find peers – because I’m highly developed as a tech, graphic artist and cartoonist. But that being the case, and because I am strong in the domains I am strong in, there’s a lot of potential for good people wanting to work with ME! So I’ll be getting some magic in on this to help me out! Wish me well.

I wish you well, I’ve done my best to make this site a worthwhile resource. Make me proud, us the information here and make it WORK FOR YOU!

Because Magic, what magic is REALLY ABOUT – is living life as if you have a say in what happens to you and in your life, and therefore TAKING RESPONSIBILITY!

Love,

Micheal Robin Cooke

Religious Thoughts

I’m not religious, but boy am i fascinated by it. I really am. And my Chaos magic practice has led me to curious conclusions.

The End of The WORLD! I’ve mentioned this before, collective will and expectation is not impotent! 2012 is coming up, let it be boring. But in this election it seems as if Doomsday anticipation is shaping Republican political agendas, as if more human suffering will allow the end times to come the much sooner. All I do know is that in the sincere Religious right is sincere belief in immanent end times and it’s not a belief system conducive to sane choices if the human race prevails anyway.

I wish some actual Christian religious leaders would distinguish this instead of me (’cause I’m not Christian): It is Christian HERESY to suggest Jesus loves the rich over the poor, that sincere Christians must be rich because prayer delivers money or something.

The Creative writing experience has taught me that if I imagine a character and focus a lot of mental energy into that character, that character can become ‘real’, even independent. As a Chaos magician this is called a servitor, originally called ‘Tulpa” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulpa . Now when more than one person invests mental energy into the same entity, it can be even more powerful and is called an egregore (an example is Santa Claus, a Corporation or meme ['welfare millionaire' is one example of an egregore as meme]).

So the Republicans that love a Jesus that loves the rich, believes in personal responsibility, and most ironically adores Ayn Rand. Guess what, that Jesus is REAL! If for not reason than that people collectively believe in that. If you believe in right wing Jesus, I bet he answers prayers, helps you win lotto – if you into it serious I bet you can convince yourself He’s communicating with you!

But no, this Jesus is NOT Biblical Jesus!

Is any Jesus the Biblical Jesus? Do Catholics, Mormons and Southern baptists worship three DIFFERENT Gods?

I’ve also been learning to be less prejudiced about Christians, to respect it’s a broad belief system. It’s really interesting that I can share many of the insights I make in this blog, with CHRISTIANS, that do not disagree with me?!

Like a blasphemous idea I’ve introduced here once before – Godhood through integrity in essence. The idea that if you always keep your word, take the discipline seriously, you word will become strong. And people that know you will have tremendous respect and belief in your word if you make it that strong. And the belief of others builds your own belief too – until your word is perhaps more powerful that it should be. Meaning if you are the person who always keeps his word, using that word to heal someone MIGHT WORK! That’s left hand magic if I ever saw it. And a Christian agrees with me? really?

Well, food for thought. Is where my head has been at recently.

Happy Birthday to me!

November 2, 1966 around 1 am, I was born full term, 3 lbs 3.5 ounces to Andrea Hamilton Cooke and Patrick Brady Cooke, in New York City. My mother named me Robin Michael Cooke, my father had my mother change the names around so my given name is Michael Robin Cooke, I am now 45 years old.

The duality of being 45 is immense. In catergories I now am decades older than I was yesterday – as 45 – 60 is considered one unit. On the other hand, I have intrinsic ‘maturity’ and culturally I can be expected to be at the apex of my earning capacity. Which makes it depressing that I clock in less than 25k/year.

On the sex front I now am a ‘daddy’ in the lingo of Gay sex. I don’t feel like one, psychically I’m still a rowdy teen. The juxtoposition of physical age and psychic age is quite a contrast for me.

On the positive, I have goals and am pursuing those goals. This is what distinguishes youth and maturity in a negative sense.Too often mature people have surrendered their goals, replaced them with acceptance of not meeting them, not manifesting new goals either. Young people naturally have goals and optimism the can be met. It’s important to distinguish that the goals of youth may never manifest if you give up because your birthdate belies a given age with cultural associations. Death is the end of striving, not aging.

What I’m up to now is http://hosthamstercrank.com. It is a web hosting company that will offer unlimited webhosting. If you want free webhosting, even that’s no limit. If you want unlimited hard drive space to back up your PC – that will become very affordable at around $5/month. If you want a serious web host plan that will allow you unlimited subdomains to sell original or affiliate products, a plan with unlimited drive space and bandwidth is yours for merely $20/month!

This is a business I believe in, if you are reading this site to learn how to use magic to grow an e-business – I can provide the hosting that puts the ‘E’ in your e-business! And I will see that you are provided software that will make creating a professional site very easy. And I will provide all buyers with articles and information – similar to what is available on this site – but without the powerful edgeprovided by Chaos magic. (the site will of course use that and any other angle).

I’ve been dragging my feet on the back end. But I’ll be finished with it this month, and in December it will be ready to sell websites! I’ll use google adwords to promote it, Because SEO is long term, if I want to test my conversion in 24 hours, paid advertising is the only way!

I’m also going to have Ithacat released in 2012, so before the ‘doomsday’, my best superhero story will be available for consumption.

I’m 45, and I will fulfill my dream! I will make my gamble! I will succeed! Or I will learn from failure and succeed when I try again!

The threat of technology

Those of you that play computer games should be noticing that the non player characters in many of those games are getting better and better at providing tough competition. Not just at chess, but at things like adaptive strategy and tactics too.

It’s one thing to point to industry and suggest factories can no longer be an economic engine for citizens because too many human beings have been replaced by robotic automation. You can hear that and feel secure that with schooling and training that would place you in a professional class, that reality need not be a threat to you.

But that’s simply not the case.  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/05/science/05legal.html?

This NYTimes article details how computer software has replaced the thousands of highly paid Lawyers and Paralegals that would evaluate documents in the 1970s. Replacing human beings and doing a better job too. And even those that would suggest computer technology doesn’t cost human beings jobs – they cannot claim that the jobs created are better jobs.

http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/robot_invasion.html

This is a collection of articles from Slate.com demonstrating many professional positions at risk of being replaced by computer programs or automation.

Basically the message is that if you are going into debt for an IVY league education, you cannot use the past to project your future earnings. Already freshly minted lawyers are delivering pizza for a living, unable to secure employment as lawyers.

It’s a problem, because a computer is better than any slave. As a professional you’re competing against a virtual intelligence that doesn’t sleep, get tired or bored, that doesn’t complain and has no responsibilities. Only when artificial intelligence is developed to a degree computers demand a living wage.. and that will never happen.

But what is computer proof? What can we do that computers cannot?

Art and creativity. And even while a computer can imitate or create art along a given set of parameters, it cannot do what a human being does :express themselves.  Because that’s what mastery is, expressing yourself. It is why Beethoven is not Mozart, and yet all of Beethoven’s work can be distinguished as such from listening to it. And a computer cannot take expertise from one field and apply it to a different field – as happened when botany gave insight to the field of genetics. Steve Jobs envisioned clean, simple design the never existed before – a computer cannot do that. Perhaps a computer will never ever do that.

Computers cannot do magic. They cannot manifest their will into reality as they lack will. That’s the human edge. So if you would plan for your future, know what you most authentically want and create that. Be an Artist and make your life an expression of who you are. Because if you settle on a career of monotony, computers are better at that than you are.
